DHL RECEIVES ISO 9002 INTERNATIONAL QUALITY CERTIFICATION FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CINCINNATI, Ohio (November 18, 1996) - DHL Airways, Inc., the U.S. arm of the DHL Worldwide Express network, has been awarded the ISO 9002 international quality registration for its U.S. airline and global hub located at the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. This certification makes DHL the first in the air express industry to receive ISO 9002 registration simultaneously for both its hub and airline operations. This award comes after a comprehensive review of all aspects of the hub and airline operations, including pilot training, aircraft maintenance, flight control and sort engineering. The audit reviewed 20 quality standard elements and was conducted by an independent agency, the Interteck Services division of Inchape Testing Services. To guarantee ongoing quality assurance and improvement, follow-up audits will be conducted every six months. "At DHL, we have always viewed quality as providing a service that meets or exceeds customer expectations," said Steve Waller, senior vice president of network transportation for DHL Airways, Inc. "We are proud to have our business practices endorsed as ISO 9002 certified." The DHL commitment to quality operations is backed up by a staff of ISO 9000 trained specialists focusing on: industrial engineering; process analysis and measurement; process improvement and re-engineering; work methods and standards; and project management. ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is a Geneva, Switzerland, based organization represented by 92 member countries. ISO 9000 involves a series of documented standards of quality management and assurance used by service and manufacturing businesses throughout the world. ISO 9002 certification guarantees an internationally recognized standard of consistency and improvement in business practices used to meet the mission of a company. "As DHL operates in more than 220 countries, ISO 9002 certification provides a level measurement of our operations that is recognized by customers in all parts of the world," said Waller. "DHL has now achieved ISO certification in 36 countries in our worldwide air express network." The simultaneous certification of the hub and airline operations represents a first for the air express industry. Waller noted the significance of the certification of the hub and sort operations, in that those elements of the air express industry are not regulated by the government, unlike the aircraft operations component of the industry. The DHL hub in Cincinnati is the largest in the DHL Worldwide Express network, with 90 percent of all U.S.-origin shipments passing through the hub. Each evening, more than one million pounds of DHL shipments to and from points spanning the globe are sorted at the Cincinnati hub. Forty-five DHL flights service the hub each evening. DHL Worldwide Express is the world's largest and most experienced international air express network, linking more than 635,000 cities in more than 200 countries. DHL Worldwide Express is composed of DHL Airways, Inc., which serves all locations in the U.S. and its territories; and DHL International Ltd. and its agents and affiliated companies, which serve all locations outside the U.S. and its territories.
