The One&Only Ocean Club has long been known for its timeless elegance, absolute privacy and exceptional service – making it a treasured hideaway for the international jet set for some 60 years. And now, with the completion of a $100 million renovation and expansion, the One&Only Ocean Club offers a superior selection of amenities and facilities, geared towards today’s increasingly discriminating and demanding traveler.
The
reborn One&Only Ocean Club
resort, owned and managed by Kerzner International, features a wide range of
guest accommodations; the critically-acclaimed Dune, the first island restaurant by über-chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten; the championship 18-hole Ocean Club Golf Course designed by golf
legend Tom Weiskopf and home to resident touring pro Ernie Els; the One&Only
Ocean
Club Estates, a collection of 121
beachfront, golf-side and harbour-view homesites, and the luxurious Ocean
Club Spa.
“The complete restoration and
expansion of the One&Only Ocean
Club has been a very important accomplishment for us,” said Sol Kerzner,
Chairman and CEO of Kerzner International.
“It represents not only the careful restoration of this legendary resort
but also the creation of one of the finest luxury destinations in The Bahamas
and Caribbean.”
The
expanded One&Only Ocean
Club features 40 spacious beachfront rooms (630 and 660 square feet) and 10
suites (1250 square feet) in five two-story buildings, each with a private
balcony or terrace on a bluff, just steps from the property’s pristine beach.
The property’s original 56 rooms, suites and garden cottages as well as all
public areas and grounds have also been completely renovated, with new furnishings
in a classic, colonial Bahamian style with distinctively modern touches. A new reception area greets guests with
expansive views of the ocean from a dramatic 14-foot terrace. The exceptional talent behind the hotel’s
stunning renaissance included Hill Glazier Architects, Barry Design Associates
(interiors), and Peridian International (landscape architects).
To attend to guests’ every conceivable needs, the One&Only Ocean Club provides around-the-clock butler service for guests, which includes packing and unpacking, dinner and activity reservations, personal wake-up calls, daily fruit bowl delivery and in-room afternoon tea and service of Champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries.
Whether offering ocean or garden views, all guest rooms and suites feature beautifully upholstered mahogany furniture and headboards; luxurious Frette linens, towels and bathrobes; sliding louvered doors that open onto private balconies or terraces, and a mini-bar stocked with essentials. Twenty-four-hour room service is provided by Dune restaurant.
To meet the needs of today’s techno-savvy traveler, guestrooms also feature the latest in cutting-edge technology, including Internet access, a portable telephone, DVD and CD player, and DMX music. Guests can choose from a wide selection of DVDs, delivered to their door by their butler. Suites in the Crescent Wing feature a steam shower, Jacuzzi bathtub with TV, and a Bose entertainment system and clock radio. Both suites and villas feature laptop computers for convenient in-room Internet access.
Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, famous for his
award-winning New York restaurants, which include Jean-Georges, Mercer Kitchen, Vong and JoJo, created the One&Only Ocean Club’s 150-seat beachfront restaurant, Dune. The elegant eatery, designed by interior
designer Christian Liaigre, is set in the dunes and offers spectacular,
panoramic ocean views. The
menu features signature dishes from Vongerichten’s critically acclaimed New York
restaurants with Bahamian influences,
including a Tuna Spring Roll with Soybean Coulis; Grouper with Aromatic
Marinated Vegetables in a Tomato-based sauce; Snapper with Carrot Confit in
Orange Juice, Cumin and Olive Oil; and Veal Chop Spiked with Sage,
Kumquat-pineapple Chutney and Madeira Jus.
The resort’s popular Courtyard Terrace
restaurant is set in the hotel’s original Hartford wing and menu from Executive
Chef John Lotarski. The menu features a
mix of longtime classics and decidedly “New World” fare, including appetizers
such as a Lobster Cappuccino, Yellowfin Tuna Tartare Tower, and
the typically Bahamian Conch Chowder. Main courses feature such classics

tableside for two) and inventive new items such as a Tasting of Veal and
Caribbean Bouillabaisse. At the
resort’s pool, a selection of light fare is served for lunch, along with fresh
juices and smoothies served all day.

The course offers seaside green and tee settings, alternating fairways,

terraced “Versailles” gardens, and a state-of-the-art fitness center and nine
Har-Tru tennis courts are also available (four lit for night play), with a
tennis pro on staff for guidance or private lessons.

As part of a spectacular $100 million renaissance
of the legendary One&Only Ocean Club resort on Paradise
Island in The Bahamas, Kerzner International Limited unveiled in December 2000
the Tom Weiskopf designed 18-hole Ocean
Club Golf Course.
Set on the eastern end of the island, Weiskopf’s
7,159 yard scenic par 72 course takes advantage of the magnificent Bahamian
landscape and island cross winds, challenging golfers’ precision and
accuracy. The Ocean Club Golf Course
offers panoramic views of the lush course and cerulean waters of the Atlantic
Ocean and Nassau Harbor – including the spectacular drivable Hole 17, which
plays entirely along the scenic Snorkelers Cove – making this 18-hole course
totally unique in the marketplace today.
The golf course attracts every caliber of golfer, and challenges the
most experienced of players, luring them back again and again. It has already played host to three of the
annual televised Office Depot Father-Son Challenge tournaments, and the Michael
Jordan Celebrity Invitational in January 2001 and September 2002.
“The One&Only Ocean Club is the perfect
location for my first Bahamian project,” commented Tom Weiskopf. “The classic design of the resort, coupled
with the spirit of Paradise Island, creates an ideal backdrop for a golf course
that I feel is memorable, dramatic and presents a fair challenge to all levels
of golfers. My goal was to design the
best course in the Caribbean.”
Said Sol Kerzner, Chairman of Kerzner
International, “We chose Tom to design the Ocean Club Golf Course because of
his dedication to quality and design.
The design reflects the continuing legacy of the resort, providing a
classic and memorable course for our guests.”
Weiskopf, an internationally recognized PGA and
Senior PGA professional golfer, has designed over 41 courses since 1983 in
destinations throughout the U.S., as well as South Africa, Japan, Scotland, and
the Philippines. Recognized by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine for his characteristic interpretation of traditional
golf course design, Weiskopf’s vision reflects an understanding of the
relationship between design and its impact on one’s outdoor experience and the
environment. Troon Golf, a U.S.-based
high-end golf development, marketing, and management company involved in
several of Weiskopf’s other projects, has been retained to manage the Ocean Club Golf Course.

OCEAN CLUB GOLF COURSE
The
Ocean Club Golf Course at the One&Only Ocean Club on Paradise Island in The Bahamas
offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Nassau
Harbour. This 7,159 yard par 72 course
was designed by Tom Weiskopf to incorporate the island’s challenging cross
winds and lush environment, as well as the natural terrain and weather systems
of the 300 acre property, into a truly world-class golf facility.
Hole 1
The
starting hole is a 403-yard medium length, par 4. The drive is from an elevated tee, across a valley, to a fairway
that is protected by two bunkers in the landing area - one on the right, the
other on the left.
The
green is protected by one bunker on the left front and a small pot bunker
directly in front. This hole usually plays straight downwind.
Hole 2
This
slightly downhill 602-yard par 5 plays into the wind with a dogleg to the
right. The tee shot is protected on the
right by a lake, and there are two bunkers on the left hand side landing
area. The second shot landing area is
protected on the left by a large bunker and tree, and the third shot will be
played to a very small green with the ocean on the right and a bunker on the
right that is 20 feet from the front of the green.
Hole 3
The
tee shot is played out of a forest and plays to a medium-sized green which is
totally surrounded by bunkers. This hole plays into the prevailing wind and
should play longer than its designed length of 176 yards.
Hole 4
This
very long, 456 yard, demanding par 4 plays into the prevailing wind. A directional bunker on the right side of
the fairway gives the player the proper line of play. The second shot is played
slightly downhill to a green protected by the ocean on its right and
behind. A deep bunker left of the green
protects from shots bailing too far left.
The second shot is extremely demanding and may be one of the most
memorable and photogenic on the golf course.
This
medium length 429-yard par 4 has a directional bunker on the left giving the
proper line from the tee. This also
creates the necessary angle for the second shot to be played slightly uphill to
a small and well-bunkered green.
Hole 6
This
is a 552-yard par 5 that offers two choices from the tee. The best visibility and position in playing
is up the entire right half of the fairway.
The conservative approach would be to play the lower fairway up the left
hand side, but this puts a lot of demand on the third shot into a well-bunkered
and small green.
This
hole almost always plays in a cross wind with a left- to- right situation. The lake off the tee to the right must be
avoided, as well as the lake in front, to the left and behind the green on the
second shot. At 411 yards, this hole is
a definite birdie opportunity if the water is avoided.
At
203 yards, this long par 3 is protected in the front left by a deep
bunker. The bunker along the right hand
side of the green is pulled away from the green and separated with a soft swale
to collect errant shots. The bunker
directly on-line with the green looks deceptively close, but actually is 50
feet away from the fringe.
Hole
9
Water
lurks entirely on the left hand side of both the tee shot and the second shot
on this long 433-yard demanding par 4.
The right upper shelf in the fairway provides the best angle to attack
this green. A bunker protects the right
front pin placement, and water protects the entire left side of the green. Four is an excellent score on this demanding
finishing hole.
Hole 10
This
is one of the prettiest par 4's on the golf course, playing 428 yards and
slightly uphill into the wind through a forest of trees. A large bunker protects the left hand side
of the fairway. Three bunkers protect
the green area, which nestles in some of the largest and most beautiful stands
of trees on the golf course.
Hole 11
This
medium length 409-yard par 4 plays slightly downhill. The second shot plays uphill to a small green with many
contours. The little pot bunker to the
left of the green will challenge even the most advanced golfer.
Hole 12
The
longest, and perhaps the prettiest, par 3 on the golf course, this 208-yard
hole has beautiful natural wetlands in front, to the right and behind. From the tee you see a panoramic vista of
most of the golf course and the beautiful waters of The Bahamas. Protected by a small bunker on the right and
a large bunker on the left, the wind makes this green smaller because of the
elevated tee shot and the prevailing crosswind.
Hole 13
This
573-yard par 5 is very reachable because of the downwind situation that usually
exists. The tee shot is somewhat
demanding. There are two bunkers on the
left and one on the right in the landing area.
The green is also protected by bunkers right and left. This hole should give up a lot of easy pars,
birdies and eagles.
Hole 14
This
hole is a long and slightly uphill par 3.
Three deep bunkers protect the left side of the green, and a large, deep
bunker protects behind and to the right.
At 194 yards, this par 3 will challenge the best long iron players.
Hole 15
A
huge dramatic bunker protects the entire right hand side of the fairway on this
short, 365-yard downhill par 4. A stand
of palm trees protects shots shying away from the bunker too far left. The green is somewhat hidden by a hillside
and protected by two small bunkers on the left. This is the smallest green on the golf course.
Hole 16
This
528-yard medium length par 5 plays slightly downhill. A narrow driving area is protected on the left by a lake and on
the right by a series of bunkers and dunes.
This green is also somewhat hidden.
Two cross-bunkers, thirty yards short of the green, control the second
shot. The conservative approach would
be to lay up short of these bunkers, allowing for an easy pitch. The risk-reward challenge would be to play
in between or over these bunkers trying to reach the green in two. The views from the tee, and when standing on
the green, are absolutely spectacular.
Hole 17
This
is the shortest par 4 on the golf course with the largest green. At only 306 yards, scores on his hole could
vary from 2 to 6. This is the only hole
that plays entirely along the ocean and one of the most beautiful beaches in
The Bahamas. It also usually plays into
the wind, but under the right conditions it also can possibly be driven by the
longest of hitters. The tee shot is the
real key to this hole, and the choice of clubs will vary from a 4 iron on up to
a driver. The green is large, well
contoured, and well bunkered. Accuracy
will be well rewarded on both the tee shot and the second shot.
This long 483-yard par 4 is protected entirely on the right side by a beautiful lake. Split the bunkers left and right of the landing area to set up the best approach to the green. The second shot is played slightly uphill to a three-tiered green protected left and right by deep bunkers.
