Mountain Jacks Restaurant 5702 Twelve Mile Road Warren, MI 48092 (810) 574-1040 Sometimes it is just not convenient for people, especially business travelers, to spend a lot of time shuttling between hotel and restaurant. Warren, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit and home of General Motors, attracts business people by the hundreds every day, but it is a long trek to the city and the better known eating establishments. Fortunately, one can find a very good meal complimented by delightful service at Mountain Jacks Restaurant, sort of a restaurant for all needs. In one section is a bright sports type bar, in another a quiet booth, in another a fireplace, and still in another almost a family type atmosphere. Luckily, the maitre d', Kent Kelley was on the evening we visited, and he assigned Megan to our table. It was evident that Mr. Kelley competently oversaw the dining room, and Megan was the perfect server who has the right instinct for when to serve, how to serve, and when to interact. The menu is varied, but not so much that the kitchen could not prepare the food properly. The wine list is a bit smaller in selection than I would prefer, but we were able to order a Ferrari-Carano chardonnet and a Clos du Bois merlot for very good values. We began with a seafood sampler which had excellent boiled shrimp, very good crab cakes (nothing imitation here) and fair stuffed mushrooms. The cream of mushroom soup was quiet good as well. A nice touch is the "salad bar", which is actually a large bowl of crisp lettuce surrounded by every necessary accoutrement. Diners can serve themselves at the table. The house dressing, light creamy vinegar and oil, was out of this world. For our entree we sampled the steak, which was excellent, and the lobster tail, which was a bit small for our liking, but was quite tasty. One of our party had the shrimp scampi which was graded as good. Maybe a bit too much butter and oil in this health conscious age. For dessert we sampled a Bailey's Irish Cream cheese cake and an oreo mousse. Both could not have been better. One might think the check would be outrageous for what we ordered, but the food bill came to only $71.00 before tip, a real bargain. The wines were in the mid $25.00-$30.00 range, right where they should have been. This is the place to go in Warren. It sure beats the trip every night to Detroit.
