THE TOTALLY GUILT-FREE VACATION: PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA 400 Avenue of the Champions Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33418 1-800-633-9150 or 1-407-627-2000 KIWI International Air Lines Hemisphere Center Routes 1 & 9 South Newark, NJ 07114 1-800-JET-KIWI WHAT IF...you could go on vacation and dine on exquisite gourmet food, pamper yourself and your body silly, recreate all over the place, be given the royal treatment, not have to completely deplete your bank account, and LOSE WEIGHT? You can, and you don't even have to look for someone with a magic wand! PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA and KIWI INTERNATIONAL AIR LINES have already turned your fantasy vacation into a reality. Located in beautiful West Palm Beach, where the year-round temperature is 73-83 degrees with lots of sunshine, PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA takes full advantage of its ideal climate. In addition to five championship tournament golf courses, there are 19 tennis courts, the largest croquet complex in the Western Hemisphere, a 26-acre sailing lake with its own beach, eight pools on the property (including one with healing waters from the Dead Sea), and a Health and Fitness Center with state-of-the-art equipment. And there is also The Spa, featuring luxurious full-service treatments and accommodations that will quickly melt tension and stress from your body. And if all this isn't enough, PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA is definitely ahead of the game with their food. There are seven restaurants and lounges, including the 4-Diamond Explorers Restaurant, the popular Northern Italian Arezzo Restaurant, The Citrus Tree bistro-style cafe, and the sports-influenced 19th Hole and Sports Pub Breakaway Eatery. And here is where the guilt-free aspect comes in to play. Spa Cuisine (food with less than 20% fat, low sodium, low cholesterol, and calorie controlled) is available at all these establishments for every meal, and that includes room service! Fear not; that doesn't mean you will be having tasteless entrees and huge salads for every meal. How do Multi-Grain Pancakes served with fresh strawberries and a low- calorie fruit syrup sound for breakfast? For lunch you can have a Sante Fe Pizza with Sports Tea; and for dinner try a Warm Spinach Dip with Pita Chips, Caribbean Crab Cakes with Pineapple Remoulade, and a slice of Key Lime Pie for dessert. Delicious and low-fat! Could you ask for more? If so, there are many selections, and each lists the calorie and fat gram count. Celebrity nutritionist and author Cheryl Hartsough works closely with the food and beverage staff to assure healthy and tasty menu items. There is also a Sports Nutrition Plan where the food is less than 30% fat and provides an energy boost for sports, as well as your regular fare. When speaking with Food and Beverage Director David Sadeghi, he insists on using the word "abnormal." After sampling some of the offerings Executive Chef Alan Gould and his talented team come up with, Sadeghi may be right. Curry Steamed Yellow Tail Snapper, Pheasant Quesadilla, Calypso Bean Soup, Guava Barbecue Shrimp with Banana Salsa, and Grilled Buffalo Steak with Roast Corn Sauce are just some of the entrees you will find on the menu. Ingredients are fresh (Chef Gould has his own herb garden right off the Putting Green), and each dish is beautifully presented. Desserts are sumptuous works of art; and prices, even in the 4-Diamond Explorers Restaurant, are very reasonable. And, if you like to mix business with pleasure, PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA has several meeting and function rooms, and their mouth-watering provisions are available for all your events, including weddings. Barbecue to Black Tie is their off-premises catering enterprise; these creative folks will plan a dinner or party, complete with theme, that will make you the envy of all your friends. As far as I'm concerned, the only way to get to PGA National Resort & Spa is KIWI INTERNATIONAL AIR LINES. This employee- owned-and-operated airlines began its flights in September 1992, and in less than a year had picked up an award from the In-Flight Food Service Association for the best coach food service in the world. Now that's impressive! The goal of this airlines with the unusual name (the kiwi is a flightless bird, and most of their employees come from other airlines that are no longer in operation and have an average of 20 years in the airlines industry) is to provide high service and low fares. KIWI provides service to Atlanta, Chicago (Midway), New York (Newark), Orlando, San Juan, Tampa, and West Palm Beach. Their fares (all unrestricted) are usually half the price of unrestricted fares from other airlines. Round-trip fares to West Palm Beach currently begin at $258.00. But don't think this means they skimp on service and accommodations. To assure that travellers have extra leg room they put 150, instead of the usual 177, seats in their 727-200 planes. There is only one class, and four attendants are available to all customers. Their meals are healthier and more interesting--no heavy sauces, fresh fruits and/or vegetables, spring water, real butter, and premium liquors. Also look for special touches like fresh flowers in the restrooms, visits from the pilots, and on my most recent flight, the KIWI CEO serving meals. When's the last time you saw that? This is an airline that is really trying harder and succeeding. KIWI automatically offers a 10% discount on all their fares for seniors, as well as one person travelling with them; and they have a special Senior Discount Pack (contact your travel agent or KIWI for details). And to further entice you to West Palm Beach, KIWI has a great incentive program--if you make ten trips on KIWI to West Palm Beach in 1994, they will give you two free round-trip tickets that can be used within a twelve- month period. So jump on a KIWI flight and head on down to West Palm Beach. Allow yourself to be spoiled at PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA, and when you come home, you won't be afraid to step on the scale. It's a dream come true! -Laurie Lawson-
